Soaring temperature takes a massive toll in Accham
|
|
People of the remote hilly district of Accham in far-western region are not only facing possible food shortages due to drought caused by extended dry spell, they are also increasingly falling ill due to the intense heat wave.
Reports quoted district health officials as saying that more than 20 percent of the population -around 50,000 people - in the impoverished district has been taken ill due to the heat wave compounded by soaring temperature.
The district has not received any rain for last three weeks and the temperature has shot up to an all time high of 41 degrees, surpassing the average temperature of below 35 degrees.

Three rehab centers for trafficked women
|

The government has established rehabilitation centers for those who have been trafficked, national news agency RSS reported Wednesday.
The reports said the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare (MoWCSW) has set up three such centers in Kathmandu, Sindhupalchowk and Kailali.
Trafficked women and children, who were rescued, will be kept in the rehabilitation centers, said Ritu Raj Bhandari, acting secretary o the Women’s Commission.

Lightning claims eight lives in Sarlahi, Rautahat
|
|
At least eight persons including three minors have been killed in different places of Sarlahi and Rautahat districts when lightning hit them on Tuesday. Fifteen others have also been injured in the two incidents.
Reports coming in from Sarlahi district said that five people died in the district due to powerful lightning bolt.

Maoists move against government

Nepal's Maoists have launched their third “people’s movement” pledging to continue their street demonstrations against the government.
Speaking at a workers’ demonstration in the village of Palung, south-west of Kathmandu, former Prime Minister Prachanda said that his Maoist party will launch a third Jana Andolan or People's movement. The first one was launched in 1990 at the start of the civil war; the second in 2006 which led to the fall of the monarchy and the birth of the country’s first democratic government.
